simple living, home grown food, clean air

We do it for the children.

A number of partially formed ideas were at the root of my decision to move away from the city towards a more natural environment, some of them were undeniably selfish, a desire for a simpler life, a sense of dread at the unsustainable nature of most of the current economic “growth”, an independent streak frustrated by increasing restrictions on personal freedom.

On a longer horizon, the opportunity to preserve a little piece of nature was also a factor, but the birth of our daughter last month has focused the mind in a way I could not imagine. Here is my flesh and blood projected into a future I will not live to see, the time scale of my thinking has been changed.

Here is another perspective from an article by George Monbiot in today’s Guardian.
